G’Day Toronto – Australia Week

G’Day mate… how ya goin’… Thanks for checking in on us to see what we’ve both been up to. I can tell you we’ve had a lot of amazing stuff happen this month! Along with all of the weddings and engagement shoots that have been keeping us busy, we were published in a 4 page spread in Canadian Family Magazine, hosted another awesome photography workshop here in Toronto and held our opening night for our CONTACT exhibit Terra Australis… Phew!! What a wild ride we’ve been on!!

This has all been so thrilling for us and we’ve hardly had a moments rest, the big news came a few days ago when Tourism Australia gave us a ring to invite our Terra Australis exhibition to be part of G’Day Toronto and come as guests to the opening night of G’Day Toronto – the week long tourism festival showcasing Australia’s culture. The room was a-buzz with music, beer and wine tastings, delicious treats, and Australian foods like Tim Tams, meat pies and Kangaroo! Yes, Kangaroo… Dave and I have had it before but it was very exotic for us to try it here in T.O. The Australian wine council was there as well with many vendors from all over Oz promoting delectable wines from many of the regions.

We had a great night at the party last night and we’re pumped to be invited to the G’Day Toronto Media Launch party this afternoon. It was so awesome to have our pieces on display and it was great having so many important people from the media from here in Toronto chatting to us about our exhibit. It’s so cool getting recognition for something that has been so much fun for us to put together. G’Day Toronto will be on from now until Saturday. If you’re looking for something fun to do in the city check out the festivities and the last chance to see our Terra Australis exhibit in our studio, it will be open this Friday from 6-9!!! Have fun at all of the G’Day Toronto festivities everyone and don’t forget to throw another shrimp on the barbie for us!

Jasmine & Louis Wedding in Perth, Western Australia

Hey everyone!

We’re back from our amazing destination wedding in Perth, Australia. We have had so many shoots since we’ve arrived home that we got a little behind on one of our favorite things… BLOGGING!  So please forgive our lack of posts. We’re sure this one will make up for it. We had so many favourite shots from this wedding that we were thinking of doing two blog posts! Jasmine and Louis were so amazing to us and treated us so well, we were stoked to go the extra mile and grab as many awesome shots of the newlyweds as we could.  We loved shooting in Perth’s warm sunshine for their wedding, it was nice getting out of the -30 temperatures for a while. Thank for having us along guys!

Meet Jasmine and Louis. This amazing couple grew up in Perth, but now call The Cayman Islands home. They wanted to have their dream wedding in Perth to be with their many loving friends and family. When they contacted us last year to shoot their wedding we were absolutely thrilled!

The morning was perfect. As Charlotte and I drove south across The Swan River, the Perth skyline glimmered in the rich Australian sun. It was almost exactly a year ago to the weekend that I shot my last Aussie wedding, and I have to say, the light down here is amazing.

We arrived at Louis’ house a little early, and were greeted by the family warmly. Their house sits atop the cliffs overlooking the Canning river, stretching out in both directions from their patio. We took a few minutes to look around and were excited at all the great locations we had to shoot in natural light.

The obviously warm and loving relationship between Louis and his dad was a pleasure to photograph. Throughout the whole day, the two of them were having a lot of laughs.

The groomsmen were looking pretty sharp too, and all three of the the guys were sharp witted and always close at hand to get Louis laughing…

At Jasmine’s house, we arrived to a similar sense of excitiment among everyone. The dress looked just amazing hanging in the spare room.

The girls were having a great time laughing away… Both Charlotte and I loved the way the girls had such a great energy about them. They really were a lot of fun to work with!

I love this photo of the girls checking up on Jasmine’s make up progress. Lookin’ good Jas!

As the finishing touches were complete, Jas looked back at her sister for the first time as a beautiful, glowing bride to be…

We all couldn’t help but feel emotional seeing Jasmine in her stunning gown. Shannon had a few tears of joy when she realized at that moment that her little sister was on her way to walk down the aisle.

When Jasmine’s Dad saw her, he looked so proud… Her Mum smiled up at them while holding back the tears. We feel so lucky to capture these touching moments at weddings.

Now the moment we’ve all been waiting for… Jasmine arrives for their enchanting wedding ceremony at the UWA (University of Western Australia) Sunken Gardens. Louis teared up emotion as he saw Jasmine’s Father walking his gorgeous bride down the aisle.

After a heart-felt ceremony the two made it official. I don’t think anyone could take the smiles off their face :)

You guys are so perfect together… You can tell Louis adores Jas and was so happy with his new bride on his arm. Jasmine was all smiles too as they walked away  as Man and Wife!

We hit the UWA (University of Western Australia) Campus for some bridal party shots… Charlotte shot Louis and his dapper groomsmen and I shot Jasmine and her stylin’ girls.

After the UWA photo shoot, we headed to the boathouse so Jas and Louis could sit back and relax for a bit as the newlywed couple. They took off their shoes and watched the waves lap to shore before heading to the reception.

The reception was fabulous! It took place in the Quarry Ampetheatre with 200 of their closest friends and family. Everyone enjoyed the loving and sometimes tearful speeches for the bride and groom. When Louis’ Father and Brother hit the stage they entertained the guests with their endless wit and humour! We were laughing so hard it really didn’t feel like work.

As the sun went down and the lights came up Jasmine, Louis and guests hit the dance floor to celebrate.  Dancing under the stars was a perfect way to end a glorious day. Thanks to Jas and Louis for choosing us as the photographers to shoot your wedding. All the very best to you both and congratulations!!

Lunch at the Indiana

Each day this week, Charlotte and I have endevoured to take in a different part of Perth. Yesterday we went and watched “Australia” in a Gold Class cinema… What’s that you ask – well let me just describe it like this, it’s to movie theatres what business class is to airplanes. As far as I know, it’s a uniquely Australian experience, and the first time I’ve experienced it.

If you do get a chance, check out “Australia” the film – although it has some pretty large overly broad stereotypes, it’s also packed with emotion and is beautifully filmed and the CG is done mostly tastefully.

Enough of the movie review! The reason I’m writing is to share with you the Indiana. For many years it’s been the “it” place to grab a drink and look down at beautiful Cottesloe beach. It stands above the local surf life savers and has a wonderful breeze blowing through all day long. It’s a beautiful spot to spend an hour or two drinking and eating great food.

I love this shot of Charlotte enjoying a cool beer with the gentle sea breeze blowing in. Just another priceless memory :)

Finally, this shot is one I grabbed as a waded into the shallows after the beach. Man, the water was actually pretty cold, but well needed seeing that it was about 35 degrees outside!

A Day in the Dunes

As we’ve been having an amazing time doing our engagement and family shoots while here in Perth (posting soon!!), we stopped by one of Dave’s fave spots that he was really stoked to introduce me to, the Lancelin Dunes!

Lancelin is located about 100 KM north of Perth and in order to arrive in time for the optimal light conditions we had to wake up at the crack of 4 AM to make the 1 hour drive for sunrise. When we got there it was honestly one of the most dramatically beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. The way the sun rose slowly – crept along and illuminated the sand dunes was just magical.

It was hard to believe that a natural wonder like this was just a hop, skip and jump from the city of Perth and not in the Sahara Desert. We loved photographing all of the amazing textures and patterns in the sand and the contrast of the sun rise and shade really made it feel like we were taking photos on the Moon!

Dave has been coming to Lancelin since he was a kid he told me about how he and his brothers would jump off the dunes and how much fun they had. I had to dare him to do it just one more time, for old times sake!

After we wrapped at the dunes we thought we’d swing by the beach to check out the scenery and maybe go for a snorkel, to our surprise we saw about 8 dolphins right at the shoreline and had to take a closer look. It was sooo amazing to see dolphins swimming in the wild. They were looking for fish, swimming on their backs and playing around in the water, I could almost touch them…so incredible.

On the way back we cruised along some country roads and ended up seeing an Emu and it’s chicks. They’re funkiest looking birds, the cool thing about Emu’s is that they are a lot like Penguins in the way that after the mother lays the eggs, the father cares for the young. It was so cool seeing a father and his babies as we drove along.

Ok, now I thought I had my Aussie animal fix for the trip…but boy was I wrong. Dave took me to Yanchep National Park for our last stop. We made it just in time for the koala tour and I have to tell you we could not believe how freakin’ cute these little guys are. Not only are they freakin’ atomically cute, but they are such fascinating creatures! I was shocked when our tour guide told us that koalas only eat eucalyptus leaves and nothing else…they don’t even drink water. They are so chilled out only because of lack of the energy in the food they eat not because they’re sleepy or…otherwise…who knew?

I almost died from cuteness when we saw the mommy Koala and her baby joey.   All we could saw was “Nah-AAaaawwwwww!”

Finally… A shot Dave grabbed by pulling over onto the side of the road and snapping. The sky is so clear and vivid blue that it comes out almost black when you shoot in black and white… Australia’s like another world.

Surfs up in Margaret River

After our long flight from Hong Kong at last we arrived in Perth, Australia!

We were so excited to get here and get settled for a month of fun including engagement and family shoots and not to mention Louis and Jasmine’s wedding just around the corner!

Since Dave is originally from Australia but has lived in Canada for the last 6 years, almost his whole family is here in Oz. We loved making our first stop and catching up with Mick, Shar and little baby Zara!  We were also stoked to be taking a road trip with them to Margaret River, Western Australia for a few days of relaxation together in one of the most beautiful nature and surf spots on Earth.

When we drove through the hills of Margaret River, it instantly reminded me of Malibu. Stunning cliff side beach homes overlooking the crashing waves below. Surfers floated by waiting to catch the perfect wave.  We unloaded the car and got settled in a beach home of our own, well at least for a few days anyway :) .

It was a perfect nature retreat with a gorgeous wrap around balcony hosting panoramic views of nature and not to mention the Indian Ocean. We loved sitting out there taking in some fresh ocean air. Surrounded by Gum Trees and Jacaranda’s the Kookaburra’s, and Willy-Wag Tails filled the air with melodies.

The brilliant vibrancy of parrots swooping through the trees reminded me that we were in our own perfect little paradise. Dave and I decided to check out the town of Margaret River, then stopped in on local surfing hot spot.

We were definitely stoked we brought our cameras along to take a few snap shots. This place was incredible. We watched the waves crash to shore and the surfers riding high on the tides, it really made me want to take up surfing some day. Mick and Shar (and baby Zsa Zsa as we sometimes call her) a big thanks to you guys for planning a great little get away for us and it was fab hanging out with you guys for a little while in Margaret River!!
