3 Days New

this-one-will-be-an-award-winning-image-for-sure

Have you ever seen anything as cute as this teeny, tiny little baby girl? Can you believe she is only 3 days old!!! Let me introduce you to little baby Caris. She was so incredibly adorable and I was so happy to have the pleasure of shooting her in the first 3 days of her little life. When Fallon, Caris’ mommy, contacted me and said she was interested in a shoot I was so ecstatic and a little bit scared! It’s not that I haven’t done a baby shoot before, it was just that I had never photographed a baby this young. Caris’ mommy and daddy came along for the shoot and helped me with the newborn session. Daddy held little Caris for this photo, can you believe that she actually fits in the palm of his hands!

Dave has been doing this for a while and has done his fair share of newborn shoots in his time, but I really wanted to try this type of photography out for myself so I decided to tackle our newborn shoots on my own. I was a little nervous and wasn’t really sure what to expect so I did a little research and found a few pointers… 1) Get some cool props (Ok, I must have spent like $800 on photography props- geesh there is sooo much cute stuff out there, Don’t tell Dave! From beanies, wraps, blankies, wooden bowls, baskets, knitted baby swings and of course the cute little baby cocoons… see below!) 2) Make sure the room is toasty warm for the little one 3) Have lots and lots of cloths, wet wipes and diapers just in case ;) 4) Give yourself lots of time because sometimes the baby won’t be sleepy or interested in having pictures taken!

Little Caris was one un-sleepy little girl. She was so cute, she would just look at me like peek-a-boo, I’m not tired, I’m wiiiide awake!

Take a look at this face! That’s what I think of every time I see this picture… Those little cheeks are so cute!

I couldn’t believe how sweet her little toes were! So small and cute as a button. She finally went down for a little snooze after a tough hour of modeling :) . Now that I’ve photographed little baby Caris I’ve come to the conclusion that I absolutely love taking newborn photos. They are so delicate and small at this age. It’s such a wonderful idea to have your baby photographed when they are so new to the world! I bet she looks different already, they grow up so fast.

I love this one, I wanted a macro shot of her eyelashes so I got in close, they were so perfect and tiny.

She was so tranquil once she fell asleep. There is nothing more peaceful than a sleeping baby :) Thanks so much to Fallon and Gary for bringing your little newborn baby girl along for a photography session with me. It was really amazing to photograph your little miracle.

The Brick Works Meadows article in Canadian Family magazine

Last Summer, Charlotte and I did a very cool kids shoot for Canadian Family magazine at The Brick Works Meadows in the Don Valley. We were charged with the task of chasing several kids around and capturing their shenanigans as they explored nature. It was a blast, and all the kids were so curious that it made taking the pictures a lot of fun.

We knew the shots were being printed for the Summer edition, but it was still very exciting to open the copy we picked up today and see our photo on the contents page, then to flip forward to the article and see four full pages of photos!! We weren’t expecting to have so many of the images in there, so it was a great surprise :)

I just want to send a big shout out to Megan for referring us for this shoot! Megan’s a past bride of our and a managing editor at Canadian Family.

(Can you tell we just saw Star Trek!? So awesome – and I’m by no means a Trekkie!)

A Destination Wedding and Little Lauren!

Some of you may remember the baby shoot we did with little baby Lauren a few months back. I was stoked because I actually won a photography award for one of the images from that shoot. She was only 8 weeks old then and she was so cute and adorable at that age! Dave and I were so honoured to photograph such an important time in Laurens life, it honestly feels like yesterday. It is so incredible how quickly kids grow up and time flies by so fast. I wonder if she actually got a chance to wear all of those cute baby clothes overflowing in her closet LOL! I have a feeling with all of her designer duds she’s going to grow up to be one well dressed fashionista!

best photo of the whole photo shoot

When Lauren’s mom Melissa was looking for wedding photographers to document their incredible destination wedding in St. Thomas we were stoked she called us first! We absolutely LOVE shooting destination weddings and it’s even better when you have such gorgeous subjects as Lauren and her mom and dad! St. Thomas is a gorgeous island on the Caribbean Sea and is a part of the Virgin Islands. It’s rich with beautiful architecture, history and not to mention gorgeous turquoise water with soft white sand beaches. We have soo many shoot ideas and we can’t wait to photograph such an amazing time in their lives!

While we were chatting about Melissa & Sean’s exciting wedding plans, we popped on a slide show of some of our destination wedding work. Lauren was so cute, she started clapping her hands and dancing to the beat of the music :) I don’t even think any of us saw the slide show, we were too busy bopping along with Lauren, she’s soo much fun to have around!

one of my favourite photos from the shoot

After the meeting Dave and I wanted to take little Lauren out for a quick 10 minute photo shoot in High Park. She looked cute as a button in her beanie and stockings, we had to get a few shots.

the cutest little chubby legs

Melissa taught Lauren how to make some funny faces so we had to take a few priceless pictures!

sticking her tongue out at mum!

"huh?" What's the mum?

It was so cute, Lauren does not like standing on any uneven ground so we put her by a tree for balance. We wanted to evoke a really true laugh and reaction out of her to show of her new toothy smile. Melissa told us she loooooves hearing the song “Low” by FloRida and it always makes her laugh LOL! Soo we all broke into our personal renditions of… Apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur… the whole club was lookin’ at her… shorty got low, low, low… Haha, she LOVED it and clapped and boogied while we sang! I don’t know if there is such a thing as an Australian Rapper but I think Dave might have to consider a career change, hmmm nah… I think we’ll keep our day jobs!!! Lauren has such a happy disposition, she has got to be the best kid ever to photograph!

can't you just hear her giggling?

We had so much fun with these guys! We can’t wait to shoot Melissa & Sean’s wedding in gorgeous St. Thomas, I’m sure we’ll sneak in a baby shoot or two while we’re away !!

Seriously one of the cutest kids in the world

Here is the slide show we put together for Laurens mom & dad of the shots we took. We thought the song was perfect because when you tell little Lauren to smile, she crinkles her nose… too funny!

The Cutest Little Girl

It was about a year ago that I was last in Australia – to photograph the wedding of Dave and Ebony. Little has changed about Perth, but there are a couple of pieces of the puzzle that are vastly different. Firstly, I’m lucky enough to have my beautiful girlfriend Charlotte with me on this trip. Last year she decided to visit her mum and little bro in Kelowna over Christmas while I was Down Under, so it’s awesome to have her along this year.

Some other changes that are especially nice are that my oldest brother and his wife have had a second little boy. He’s about 9 months old now and is adorable.

Long time readers of the blog may remember my new born niece from my last trip. She’s grown up a lot since then – constantly chatting in her own sweet little language, and nearly walking. It’s been so nice having a full week with Mick, Sharon and Zara, getting away to Margaret River with them and basically catching up on the last year of our lives. It’s been a busy year for us all, so it’s great to get quality time together.

During the course of that time we often had the camera out, and Charlotte was loving the many dozen opportunities to capture Zara getting up to all sorts of activities.

This first shot, while being rather messy is my favourite! How adorable is she!!!?

While out shooting the natural beauty surrounding Margaret River, Charlotte is always pointing out cool photo locations, shot ideas, angles and great areas of light. One of the things that keep on catching her eye are these certain plants that are a bit like wheat, but feel like soft fur on top. So when we saw a great patch of light flooding a field of these angelic grass heads, she set about doing a impromptu photo shoot with Zara.

Isn’t she the cutest????? I know right!

And yet another priceless photograph of Zara, with that cheeky look she loves to give you as if to say “I know exactly what you’re up to!”.

As we were driving back to Perth on Friday, mick spotted this great tin shed and pulled over. He’s got a spot on the living room wall full of amazing photos he’s taken (he’s shares my creative streak), with a large empty frame hanging in the centre… “We’d like to put a family portrait in that frame” he’d said when I first arrived. We’d decided that a rustic red toned background would be perfect, so had been looking for the right location during our trip, and here it was!

We spent only two or three minutes taking some photos and got some really cute sequences of them playing with Zara, lots of tickling and laughing was involved. These were my favourites from the set.

Charlotte and I have a couple of shoots coming up in the next week and will be posting those as they happen. Until then, we’ll sign off – we’re off to the beach for a swim.
